The I-64 Southside Widening and High Rise Bridge, Phase I Project will widen nearly 9 miles of I-64 in Chesapeake by adding one Express Lane in each direction.
A New High Rise Bridge
The centerpiece of the project will be a new, 100-foot-tall bridge with a fixed span just south of the existing bridge. Upon completion, westbound drivers (towards Virginia Beach) will use the new crossing while eastbound drivers (towards Suffolk) use the original bridge.
Other Major Improvements
The Great Bridge Boulevard Bridge over I-64 will be replaced, and six land-side I-64 bridges -- at Military Highway, Yadkin Road and Shell Road -- will be widened and the existing lanes will receive an asphalt overlay.
